The SJWWC is a social club
for those interested in exploring their surroundings and getting the most
out of their time living in London. We are women of all ages, from all
over the world, and with or without children. This club offers a casual
and comfortable environment to meet other women and tries to balance the
activities according to the time schedules of women with school-age children.
It makes it easier for you to visit a new
exhibition at a museum after hearing an expert lecture, see a historic home with a private
Blue Badge guide to tell you its history, take a trip to Stoke-on-Trent
to the pottery outlets, or have private access and tours of places like
the Tower of London and Houses of Parliament. If you had hobbies or activities at home
that you want to continue or learn for the first time, we offer tennis, Mahjong, golf, stitchery, book groups and
cooking classes. Our long country walks and London walks provide an opportunity
to explore our physical surroundings with energy, fun and cheer. For more
information about an activity group, click on the links listed below.
Our Monthly Meetings
take place on the second Tuesday of each month, September to June. We
start with coffee and conversation and follow with a featured speaker.
For more information about
the SJWWC, please contact us at
membership@sjwwc.com.
Membership forms can be printed
out and sent to our membership chair via post.

Antiques:
Each month one or more events/programs/trips are offered.
We've done shopping trips to country towns and train trips to the
Paris markets! Often we visit antique markets in Central London.
Some programs are designed to help you learn about various aspects
of antiquing like 'How to buy at an auction house' or 'What to look
for when buying an antique clock.' <<Back

Art Appreciation: The art
appreciation group sets out to explore just a fraction of the
two-dimensional and three-dimensional events in London. We have a great
time visiting galleries and museum exhibits as well as listening to
lectures and learning more about the ins and outs of London's contemporary and historical
art world. <<Back

Book
Group: The book group meets once a month for lively, informal
discussions of a book chosen in advance by the group. Join us whenever a book catches your
eye; monthly participation is not required. <<Back

Culinary
Adventures: This group meets once a month to learn something
about cooking that they didn't already know! We try to vary the
cuisine and type of instruction, and almost always include a tasting
if not a full meal! Demonstrations take place in a restaurant, cooking
school or even private homes. It is a wonderful way to meet new
people and learn about various cuisine as well. <<Back

Foreign
Travel: We work with a local travel agent to take us on 2-3
day trips like visiting the German Christmas Markets in Nuremberg
and Rothenberg, and biking trips to Tuscany and Andalucia.

|
Golf:
The golf program during the year consists of fall and spring
golf lessons for both the beginner and intermediate golfer. We have
a series of 6 golf lessons with a pro at a local driving range.
Occasionally, we have golf outing at a local golf club. It is a
good way to become friends with other women who have the same interest
in the game! <<Back

Issues of the Day: We meet monthly for
discussion, mutual learning and maybe even enlightenment, focusing
each month on relevant and contemporary hot topics. We also attend
lectures and debates together.<<Back
|
|
Keep
Fit: A low impact aerobic and body conditioning class for all
levels of fitness. We meet three days a week and use a professional
teacher with many varied routines to prevent boredom. We have lots
of fun and are much less costly than joining a gym! <<Back

|
Holiday & Spring
Luncheons: In December and May we have beautiful Luncheons in some
of the finer hotels and venues in London. These more formal social occasions
are festive and celebratory...not to be missed!

Local
Travel: The local travel group organizes day trips in areas
just outside of London, usually no more than a two hour bus trip
or a 60-mile radius. Castles, stately homes, shopping trips, gardens
and even historic towns are on the agenda. <<Back

Mahjong:
Whether you can
already play, ro if you would like to learn to "Kong", Pung"

|
|
Mothers'
Resource: If you are a mother of small children, please join
us for our informal playgroup. We meet twice a month at parents'
homes. The ages of the children range from infants to four years old.
Join us to talk about your experiences dining out, vacationing,
baby-sitting and other issues involving living with small children
in London. In warmer weather, we plan to meet at parks or other
venues such as the Zoo. <<Back

Mudlarks:
AskOxford.com describes a mudlark as "a person who scavenges in
river mud for objects of value". And that's exactly what we do -- scavenge
the banks of the Thames at low tide. The objects we've found have no real
value, but the fun is in seeing and experiencing the history of London from
a unique perspective <Back
|
| Stitchery: The SJWWC Stitchers meet twice a month at a member's home to
work on any type of needlework project. While not a formal teaching group,
one of the talented members can usually provide assistance if help is needed
with a knitting, needlework or quilting project.
|
|
Tennis:
The tennis groups meet weekly at indoor courts at a private club
near St. John's Wood. There are three levels of play: Advanced,
Intermediate and Advanced Beginners. The format is round robin
doubles for two hours. We also occasionally offer four-week sessions
of two hour clinic/play time for our members. <<Back

Tea
with Friends: Each
month a different venue is chosen to sample the quintessential British
experience, "tea". Attendees enjoy good company as well as delicious
scones, sandwiches, pastries and, of course, tea in elegant hotels
and restaurants around London. <<Back
|
|
Theatre:
Theatre meets once a month for matinees or evening performances
of the best theatre in London. It's a very popular group because
we offer group discounts. Sometimes we just meet at the half-price
ticket counter in Leicester Square and see something spur of the
moment! <<Back

Walks-Long
Country Hikes: Once a month, around 20 women and our wonderfully
patient guide head out of London to the beautiful and varied English
country side for about a 10 mile walk. Most months we travel around
45 minutes by train to areas like the Chilterns, Surrey, Kent, Sussex
and the Cotswolds to walk, regardless of the weather conditions.
Some of our more memorable walks have been in the mud. Twice a year
we go further a field, perhaps to the Lake District, the
South-western
coast, Yorkshire or the Isle of Wight to spend 2-3 days walking,
talking, and laughing. Country walking in Britain is truly a unique
experience and a great way to visit more pubs! <<Back

|
Walks-London: Walking in London is great! So many new sights to
see! These
walks are designed to get you out and about after the children are
off to school, and back to the neighborhood before the bus returns
them home. Here is your opportunity to be guided along as you stretch
your legs, get some fresh air, meet new friends and catch some of
those city sights. <<Back
